September 2   Understanding Audiology

Audiology is an important science for anyone affected – either directly or indirectly – by some kind of hearing loss or balance disorder.   One should check out practitioners in their area – if living in Virginia there should be some good ones there – to treat them or even proactively prevented related damage.  That is what a trained audiologist can do.

There are various testing strategies to determine the extent of the loss of hearing which an audiologist needs before treating a patient.  These include: otoacoustic emission measurements, hearing tests and videonystagmography.  As well, more specific tests to determine which portions of hearing are affected (low, middle or high frequencies) are also used in a proper diagnosis.

Thereafter, appropriate treatment and options are discussed and offered to the patient.  It is worthwhile checking the credentials of the audiologist before being diagnosed or treated.
